01.12.2016 Words from The Boss - Helen Mansfield

The BossIt is true what they say about time going quicker as you get older and I’m really not sure where this year has gone!! The end of the year is rapidly approaching and I am delighted to report that Ridgeback Rescue has had a really good year.  We have helped lots of Ridgebacks in need and their owners. We have also been helped by so many wonderful kind supporters in 2016 and if you have donated your time, or money or experience thank you so much.  There was a wonderful atmosphere at the Companion Show and Fun Day in September and we are all looking forward to next year and hope you can join us. Everyone at the Club open show held in aid of Rescue had a great day and it is so kind of the committee to help the breed in this way.   Geoff and Eileen organised some fun quiz evenings in Leicestershire that combined a good night out with raising money and they have more planned for 2017.

Between January and mid-November 2016 we have been contacted about 78 Ridgebacks.  It is a shocking number! Some we have managed to re-home, some we have helped to stay with their families, some we have never heard of again when the owners have discovered that we don’t buy rescues and/or dogs have to be checked before we take them, and some are still with us waiting for the right family to love. Janice and Julie do a fantastic job in arranging dog checks, home checks and transport and if you feel that you would like to help please let them know.  We also need help with short and long-term Foster Homes and if you feel you could offer a Ridgeback a bed, some love and your experience please let us know.  Not all our Ridgebacks fare well in kennels and we have had several this year that have needed medical treatment and somewhere comfortable to recuperate.

There are lots of ways to help, some old and some new, and all the details are on the website. One fund raiser that has certainly caught the imagination over the last few weeks has been the Facebook Auctions run by Lynn Maylor.  We started off with a few donated items but people have not only been generous with the bids but also with donating more objects for auction.  As a result, we are going to run another set of auctions in the spring so if you have any Ridgeback related items that you no longer want but might be very special for someone else please let Lynn know.

Santa Sleigh
A huge thank you to everyone for your support and best wishes for a Happy Christmas and a wonderful year in 2017.

Rescue Ridgeback Show 2016

During the past few years, the last weekend of November has become the date that the Ridgeback showing community turn out to show their support for Rescue.

HamperSince 2008 the committee of the M&N Rhodesian Ridgeback Club has kindly run a show completely in aid of the Rescue. The money raised has been vital to our survival. This year the committee had to find a new venue at short notice and our judge, Jemma McCarthy, the committee and the exhibitors all made the best of the slightly cramped conditions to have fun and enjoy a relaxed day out with their hounds.

As has become a bit of a tradition Paul & Liz Storey donated a magnificent wine hamper to be raffled. Toni Agnew did a fantastic job as ticket-seller and encouraged everyone to dig deep.  It was unanimously agreed how apt it was that Julie Robinson (Rescue Trust Secretary) had the winning ticket as she works so hard for Rescue all year.

Showing is a bit of an add on to this particular show, but congratulations must go to all at Kiromol Rhodesian Ridgebacks for winning Best In Show with their young girl Spirit, and Wendy and John Broadsmith for winning Reserve Best In Show with Shona.

Huge thanks to the committee for all their hard work on the day and in the lead up to the show, it is really appreciated and means we can help Ridgebacks without worrying over the Christmas period.

Our Quizzes have proved to be very popular, even being described by one quizzer as "the best I've ever been to". This is, in no small part, to the efforts of trustees Geoff and Eileen Phillips who organize every aspect of the night.

06.10.2016 Sid

SidMany thanks to Sue Johnson and all members of the Facebook Group Rhodesian Ridgebacks Forever who organised and took part in the group's auction to raise funds for the specific benefit of Sid, the poorly ridgeback. The final total raised was a magnificent £3,345.72.

Sid was signed over into our care after being "rescued". He was suffering from various ailments including a damaged skull, epilepsy and not to mention, a missing ear! Luckily for Sid, his chauffeur for the first leg of his journey to the rescue kennel was Lesleyann Clark, a lady who fell in love with Sid and became his fosterer. It seems she's been a failure at that, we hear a whisper that he may now be staying with her permanently! Sid's adventures with Lesleyann can be followed on facebook at his facebook group What Sid Did.

Our thanks to Lesleyann, and once more to Sue Johnson and the Rhodesian Ridgebacks Forever gang for coming to Sid's aid.

This is a fantastic outcome considering it is always so much harder for us to take on and find a new home for a Ridgeback that is signed over to us by a third party. It is much easier if we can arrange a Rescue directly with the owner and would urge people to contact us directly.
06.10.2016 Companion ShowOur thanks to everyone who attended and supported our Companion Show & Fun Day which raised a fantastic £864.00! Full details of the day here..........

It's Calendar Time...........

In truth it's a little bit past calendar time, we would normally launch this in the Spring........ The seasons have been strange this year..... don't you think?

Anyhow, to the point, all you good people have come through for us in the past no matter how difficult the task. We need pictures of your dogs to star in our 2017 RidgebackRescue 20th July 2016!

If you would you like your dogs to feature in our 2017 Calendar, it's time to get snapping.

There are a few rules all of which can be found Here T&C's.

Preferably pictures should be taken with a camera set at the highest resolution possible, and at a minimum of 300dpi (no, I don't really understand it either, but that's what the printer tells us!) I think most modern digital cameras should be capable of this. We have, in the past, been short on Winter/Christmas scenes, if you have any of those please send them in.

Photos should be submitted to

Naturally not all submitted pictures can be included, please don't be too despondent if your's is not selected. However, submitters of those which are selected will receive a calendar for free.

As usual, profits will go towards caring for ridgebacks that need our help!

Thank You, One and All

Breed Council

The Breed Council representing all four Rhodesian Ridgeback Clubs in Britain meets twice a year to discuss all Rhodesian Ridgeback related issues. Its function is to collate the collective views of all clubs and present them to The Kennel Club. News of The Breed Council activities will be posted as available.

Discover Dogs

Discover Dogs is becoming increasingly popular. In future on ridgeback day at Crufts, the stand will be manned, and ridgebacked, by some of our Rescue Rhodesian Ridgebacks (check out their stories). We also attend Discover Dogs at Earls Court, London, in November and in May we represent Rhodesian Ridgebacks at the "All About Dogs" exhibition in Essex. We always need people to help with these events so if you would care to volunteer your services for a couple of hours it will alleviate the strain on the regulars who do a full days stint, which is unfair on their Ridgebacks. With hundreds of people milling around asking questions, some sensible, some ridiculous, even Ridgebacks get tired out. As long as your dog is "bombproof" and you like talking (and lets face it what RR owner doesn't) Please offer to help.
