Fun Day 2012

Fun DayFun Day 2012 by Ann Gates

The Funday at John & Cheryl’s home at Hendwick Hall was not as well supported this year as in previous years although we still had well over a hundred guests, probably due to everyone having to pull their belts in a little, however the ridgeback people who did come certainly turned up trumps as we raised over £1400 pounds for rescue, which is an amazing amount considering we where well down in numbers. We where once again blessed with good weather over the weekend and wonderful food as usual. Thanks to Cheryl’s and her extremely hard working team of ladies.

On the day all dogs are treated as honouree ridgebacks so we do get quite a few other breeds along for the day who live happily with their ridgeback friends many of them rescue’s to.

Fun DayWe have had several requests over the years to run a K.C.G.C Bronze test, and Alex’s friends Anne Dawson. and Mandy Halder kindly offered to come and run it for us. Sadly we only had one candidate Claire Preston with her ridgeback Junior who successfully passed the test.  As they had so kindly arranged to come for the day we decided to run a doggie Olympics course which proved very popular and was won by Kerry Rhodes and Axel, 2nd was Anoelia Thompson with Winston and 3rd was Arran Barkley with Waffles

This year we decided to add some extra games and started in the morning with the egg & spoon race with the youngster (no dogs in this game) won by Mark Oliver with Haydon Baxter coming in a close 2nd and Elle Enwright taking 3rd place.

This was followed by one for the adults & dogs and the winner was Paul Baxter with Ari, followed by Claire Preston & Junior with Donna Connelly & Tink taking 3rd place.

Fun DayThe sack race for the kids was won by Haydon Baxter with Arron Barkley taking 2nd and Mark Oliver coming a close 3rd.

The doggy dribbling race was won by Paul Baxter & Ari, 2nd Caarlie Edmonson & Victor and 3rd Kerry Rhodes and Axel

The kids version without dogs was won by Morgan Baxter, 2nd Elle Enwright and 3rd Mark Oliver.

Hoopla for 2 & 4 legged competitors was won by Paul Baxter & Ari, 2nd Val Sykes & oscar with Robert Barras and Themba taking 3rd.

Fun DayWe had a very sporting group of people; all the games had run off’s for the prizes and this year we had a lot more children taking part. We made the mistake in one of the final heats of giving the small ones a head start over the older ones, but we didn’t realize that we had some future Olympic champions in our midst and the little ones won with flying colours. After lunch we had the Ridgeback Rescue parade and this year as well as the usual goody bags were generously donated by Jamie Dyson all the dogs got a rosette to acknowledge their status as rescue’s, a big thank you to Jamie for his kind support.

Each year we read out the stories behind all rescue dogs and these stories   always bring a tear to your eye and the people who adopt some of the rescue dogs are to say the least wonderful.

Fun DayThe dog scurry as usual was very popular and is split into 3 age ranges. Puppy scurry (up to 12mths) won by Stewart Johnstone’s Scarlet, 2nd Gary Denvor’s Mr P  Adult scurry (up to 8yrs)  Finn owned by Debbie Easton Joint 2nd Debbie Easton’s Kaya & Helen Edmondson’s Chika.

Veteran (8yrs & over) 1st Kika  2nd Matayo both owned by Chris Geldart & 3rd Dune owned by Steve.

Fun DayAll the fun classes had big entries for our judges to choose from. Prettiest Bitch was Stewart Johnson’s Scarlet. The Most handsome dog went to Gary Denver’s Mr P. The dog with the waggiest tail was Steve Larkin’s Staffy Duke (his tail never did stop wagging) and the dog the judge would like to take home was Claire Preston’s Junior.

The raffle, guess the weight of a large box of dog biscuits and a new one this year guess how many sweets in a large jar, always raises lots of money. The winner of the jar of sweets was Linda Fletcher and the answer was 169 sweets. The guess the weight of the dog biscuits was won by Andy Richardson and the weight was 4.67 kg. Special thanks go to Jackie Stephenson for baking “Rocky Road”  so beautifully presented and quickly sold out on the day.

Fun DayThis year we had the new M & N R.R Support & Rescue Trust team with their posh new stall selling lots of items and raising awareness of some of the dogs currently looking for new homes.

It would have been nice to see a few more show people as if you look back at most pedigrees of these dogs you will find well known names behind many of them. Thank you to the ones who did come and support us on the day. The fun day would not be possible without all our helpers and sponsors who we cannot thank enough. Cheryl and John and their family who welcome us into their home each year and feed everyone. Ian and Alex Schofield & Ann Gates who help set up and run the games and scurry, Margret Taylor who comes and takes all the lovely photo’s for us each year. (To see all the photo’s she took check out Anne and Marsha who came and ran the obedience based doggy Olympics for us, despite the fact that neither of them have ridgebacks. We must also give a very big thank you to the following sponsors who donated many of our prizes.
Jamie Dyson, Jackie and Ian Stephenson of Topshow, Tesco, Pets at Home, Asda, Bata.

Donations were gratefully received from: Credwyn Macaulay, Mark Cannon, Gary Denver, Ann Davis, J Geldart, Tracey Doughty, Jean Dodsworth, Wayne and Lynn Dodsworth, Cyril Hill, Karen Lynn, Andrew Thompson and Diane Taylor, Brenda Mackfall, Ian and Jackie Stephenson, Nicolas and Gloria Antunez-Perez from Gran Canaria and Michaela Tuttle.

Special thanks go to the following for their help and support on the day: Melissa Schofield, Marion and Sharon Bailey, Mary, Jean Dodsworth, Madge Bowser, Brenda and Derek Mackfall, Gillian Craven, Phyllis and Geoff Ramsdale, Keith Jackson, Andrew and Diane William and Edward Thompson, Margaret Taylor, Angela Thompson and Andy Richardson, Ron and Vera Swales, Steven Larkin, Ian and Jackie Stephenson Anne Dawson. and Mandy Halder

In 2013 we will be holding our 10th Anniversary Funday, which we hope will be an extra special event for all those who attend. We will keep you posted on the date but we are hoping for sometime in mid August again.

The Roger Inman Print which was donated by Mrs Mary Haywood raised £142 for rescue, was drawn at the rescue show to24th Nov and was won by Karen Lynn, some of this money was raised at the funday.
